Rumours of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s purported plans to defect are causing tension to rise between the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State.

According to reports, the governor is considering joining the APC in order to guarantee his job at the Abere Government Secretariat in Osogbo, along with his close family and negotiators.

However, there have reportedly been difficulties in attempts to complete this move through meetings with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to some sources, Governor Adeleke’s attempts to meet with the president have not produced the expected results, and others say that attempts to do so have been thwarted by resistance inside the presidency.

APC chieftain and former Osun State Commissioner for Information Sunday Akere claimed in an interview with the Daily Sun that Governor Adeleke had tried, but failed, to obtain an automatic return ticket by joining the APC.

“Membership of a political party is free entry and free exit. APC is an open party. If he wants to join, he’s free but the only thing is that our governorship ticket is not available for take. If he’s joining, he will join as a member not negotiating to pick our ticket,” Akere stated.

He further disclosed that the governor has made several attempts to meet with the president, but that the negotiation does not include the governorship ticket, even though he is free to join the APC.

Olawale Rasheed, the governor’s spokeswoman, responded by calling the allegations “fake news from the pit of hell.”
He blamed them on a dysfunctional opposition that is unable to produce a strong candidate for the 2026 governor contest.

“The report reflects the depth of unelectability of the APC in the 2026 guber election, as the opposition is at a crossroads over acute short supply of electable aspirants,” Rasheed said.

He emphasised that there are no intentions for defection to the APC and that Governor Adeleke is still committed to governing and promoting cooperation with the federal government.

Despite these denials, the Daily Sun claims that there may be some truth to the defection rumours because those close to the president have stated that they would be open to considering the move, noting the political maxim that “politics is a game of numbers.”

But the APC’s internal opposition has also expressed worries about the possible repercussions of admitting Governor Adeleke to the party.

A source within the APC remarked, “If the governor was doing well and truly has what it takes to govern, we won’t have issues with him joining us. But the man is coming with a lot of baggage. Accepting him into APC is like moving with someone with rashes all over the body.”

Tensions have increased after Prince Dotun Babayemi and his group defected to the APC; some see this as a sign of the PDP’s difficulties in the state. But according to APC officials, they do not need Governor Adeleke to secure a victory in Osun.
