The National Association of Seadogs (NAS), also known as Pyrates Confraternity, recently organised a free medical mission for at least 800 residents of Orogwe Community in Imo State. The medical mission, which offered diagnosis, treatment, and essential medications, was part of the association’s 49th Konverge activities in Owerri.

The group’s National President, Dr Joseph Oteri, said the event was part of NAS’s quarterly mission to support people in communities. “We chose a community to offer free Medicare to residents, especially the downtrodden,” he said. “We are happy that people came out in their numbers for this programme.”

The medical team, comprising 41 doctors from within and outside the country, provided medical services to the residents. Some patients were referred for surgeries, and the association promised to support their hospital bills. Oteri dispelled the notion that NAS is a cult group, saying it was “formed for the protection of the downtrodden as well as social advocacy for positive changes.

The association’s Chief Programme Officer, Chief Bart Akelemor, said the group’s ideals are to promote a society where people have access to resources, medical care, and employment. “Bringing the NAS medical mission to Orogwe is to support the state government in meeting the medical needs of the people of the area,” he said.

Beneficiaries of the medical mission expressed gratitude for the services. Mrs. Chizoba Igwe, who received medication for malaria treatment, described the process as “easy and laudable.” Mrs. Mmesoma Njoku, who received medicated glasses, thanked the association for the intervention.

In addition to the medical mission, the association launched an arts exhibition to promote good governance, security, poverty reduction, and a more prosperous future for Nigerians. Oteri said the exhibition aimed to “elevate underrepresented voices and foster dialogue that promotes understanding and empathy.”

The association’s Chief Archivist, Prof. Adesoji Adesugba, said the group would utilize every positive avenue to drive its message home. The exhibition, “Art Ova Yap,” featured artworks by members, and proceeds from the artifacts would be channeled to support families of deceased members
