An internet debate has been triggered by veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie’s claim that Igbo men are not innately drawn to politics because they cannot stand the betrayal that is frequently connected to the field.
The renowned actor recently discussed why Igbo politicians frequently struggle to maintain long-term political partnerships in an interview with Afia TV.
“An Igbo man is not a good politician. And I will tell you why — people who are used to politics, or the treachery that characterises politics, can overlook a lot of things,” he explained.
An Igbo politician finds it difficult to maintain any kind of contact with the person or party involved after feeling deceived, according to Edochie.
“The Igbo man is not constituted to condone treachery a second time. If you hurt him once in politics, he will never give you an opportunity to hurt him again. He will recoil,” he said.
“That’s the average Igbo man. The moment you exhibit treachery in your involvement with an Igbo man, they cut you off. That’s it.”
Edochie’s comments have sparked debate on social media, with many people concurring that cultural values and tribal identity frequently influence political dynamics in Nigeria.
The actor has long been respected for his candid opinions on social and cultural issues and is well-known for his commanding presence in classic Nollywood films.
His remarks coincide with Nigeria’s ongoing struggles with ethnic representation and public confidence in the government, particularly in the run-up to elections.
