Lauretta Onochie, a former aide to former President Muhammadu Buhari, has praised former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Boss Mustapha for clearing up what she called persistent misinformation regarding Buhari’s presidential victory, according to a post posted on her official X (formerly Twitter) handle.
Mustapha’s divisive remarks during the book launch, According to the President, which took place in Abuja on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, prompted Onochie’s response. During the event, Mustapha denied the popular notion that Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the current president and former governor of Lagos, was a major factor in Buhari’s election in 2015. Instead, he contended that Buhari’s rise to power was fueled by his popularity and the combined efforts of other APC members.
In a social media response, Lauretta Onochie said the disclosure signaled the end of what she called a political lie.
“Every lie has an expiry date, Yesterday, the lie that BAT (Bola Ahmed Tinubu) made Buhari president expired. Thank you, Boss Mustapha, for puncturing the lies of those unsuccessfully trying to rewrite history.” she wrote.
Onochie continued by asserting that President Tinubu never backed Buhari’s 2014 campaign, which fueled the ongoing discussion regarding historical revisionism and internal party dynamics inside the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Talks about Nigeria’s political ties, loyalty, and the real masterminds behind Buhari’s electoral triumph have been rekindled by the former presidential aide’s comments. Reactions to her remarks have been conflicted; some have praised her audacity, while others have accused her of inflaming political discord.
The past continues to be a battlefield for conflicting narratives within Nigeria’s ruling class as political rhetoric heats up in anticipation of the 2027 elections.
