In her valedictory speech, Dr. Ugoh shared her story of perseverance through hardship and self-doubt. “My journey through medical school has been far from smooth. There were days I studied on an empty stomach and nights I wanted to give up,” she said, crediting her mother, Mrs. Prisca Ekeh, for being her pillar of support.

Dr. Ugoh revealed that her mother sold many personal possessions to ensure she could complete her medical education. “My mother suffered so much for me. She sold a lot of her belongings to make sure I went to school and completed my medical training,” she said

The young doctor vowed to take care of her mother and replace everything she gave up for her education. “I’ll keep striving to make her even prouder. I promise to take care of her and replace everything she gave up for my education. She will never suffer again,” she said.

Dr. Ugoh hopes to undergo her internship in Abuja and specialise in either ophthalmology or community medicine. She also expressed her desire to practice abroad if given the opportunity.

Meanwhile, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has warned medical professionals against unethical practices, threatening to withdraw licenses from those involved. Dr. Fatima Kyari, MDCN Registrar, emphasised the importance of empathy and humility in medicine.

The university’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Celestina Njoku, advised the new doctors to uphold the values instilled in them and leverage technology to improve healthcare delivery
