Thirty seven inmates on death row await execution

A total of 37 inmates convicted of capital offences in Bauchi State remain on death row, awaiting execution as state leaders continue to delay the signing of death warrants.

This information was shared by Ahmed Tata, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in Bauchi, during an interview on Tuesday with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

According to Tata, the group comprises 36 male inmates and one female, all of whom were found guilty of capital offences by different courts in the state. Despite receiving death sentences, none of the inmates have been executed due to the unwillingness of past civilian governors to authorize their executions.

“Since 1999, no democratically elected governor in Bauchi State has signed a death warrant,” Tata explained. He pointed out that while executions might have occurred under military regimes, elected governors have consistently refrained from endorsing them.

Tata’s statement came as part of a broader investigation by NAN into why many state governors across Nigeria are reluctant to approve executions for inmates on death row.

In line with the Nigerian Constitution, a death sentence issued by a court can only be implemented once the state governor signs a death warrant. However, many governors have opted not to exercise this power.
