The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has raised concerns that Yoruba Muslims are being intentionally excluded from political appointments under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

The group alleges that a powerful faction is preventing genuine, practicing Yoruba Muslims from securing important government positions. In a statement issued on Monday and signed by its Founder and Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, MURIC accused unnamed individuals of manipulating the system to block Yoruba Muslims from assuming leadership roles.

MURIC also claimed that some Yoruba Christians are fraudulently taking positions intended for Muslims by maintaining Muslim names on official documents.

The statement also noted, “Those who sabotaged the effort to make Mallam Nasir El-Rufai a minister in the current administration have similarly undermined our efforts to free Yoruba Muslims from educational, economic, and political marginalization.”

The organization expressed frustration at what it sees as a coordinated effort to prevent Yoruba Muslims from gaining access to political power. Despite their role in rallying Northern support for President Tinubu’s election, MURIC lamented their exclusion from the political process.

“It is the names of Yoruba Muslims who have converted to Christianity (either willingly or unwillingly) but who retained their Muslim names in their official documents that are allowed to reach the president. Only two or three real Yoruba Muslims have succeeded in getting political appointments,” the statement alleged.

MURIC also called on President Tinubu to intervene in what it referred to as “religious identity theft.” According to the group, some individuals who have converted to Christianity but kept Muslim names on their official documents are securing political appointments meant for Yoruba Muslims.

The statement alleged, “It is those who converted to Christianity but retained Muslim names in official documents who are reaching the president. Only a few genuine Yoruba Muslims have received political appointments.”

“For mobilizing the whole North to support the incumbent, for going to court to challenge the emefialisation of the naira (which was aimed at sabotaging the emergence of Tinubu as president), efforts should be made to close the gap between El-Rufai and the president,” MURIC stated.

The organization concluded by urging the president to reconsider the process for selecting qualified Yoruba Muslims for appointments, warning that the ongoing exclusion could create further divisions in the South West.

“Mr. President is advised to review the methodology for identifying true Muslims with the right qualifications to fit into his vision. Cross-checking with the right quarters will go a long way in stemming the incident of identity stealing and religious impersonation,” MURIC stated.
