On Wednesday, January 15, Amnesty International denounced the horrifying murder of Salome Eleojo Adaidu, 24, by Timileyin Ajayi, a purported gospel singer.

The international human rights non-governmental organisation claimed in a statement posted on its verified X (previously Twitter) profile that femicide is a significant issue in Nigeria that has to be addressed seriously by the government.

The event occurred on Sunday, January 12, in Agwan Sarki, Orozo, near the federal capital territory (FCT).

Salome’s sister, Esther Adaidu, countered that her sister was seeing Ajayi for the first time and disputed that her sister was seeing him.

On the evening of Monday, January 13, Salome’s remains were laid to rest.

Salome served for Nicon Insurance in Abuja as a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) until her life was tragically interrupted.

The Kogi State University Library and Information Science graduate had left her family at home, claiming to be going to see a friend. However, after Ajayi was detained with a human head gushing blood, her photos went viral.

Amnesty International’s statement reads in full: “The slaughter of 24-year-old Salome Adaidu, by gospel singer Timileyin Ajayi, once again, highlights the urgent need for the Nigerian authorities to effectively address femicide:

“There are no two sides to these brutal atrocities targeting women. In almost all recent cases of femicide in #Nigeria, the authorities do not rigorously pursue all lines of inquiry, and their failure further endangers women’s human rights to life and physical safety.

“Slow pace of investigation and prosecution of recent femicide cases across Nigeria is worrying and must be addressed effectively. We urge the security agencies to develop and establish femicide investigation expertise and units.“

Claims that Ajayi had a romantic involvement with the woman’s daughter were denied by her relatives.

The family voiced worries about the possible relocation of the case and the police’s purported lack of transparency.
