A Northern socio-cultural organization, Northern Ethnic Youths Group Assembly (NEYGA), has criticized Amnesty International (AI) for endorsing false information aimed at destabilizing Nigeria.
On Friday, a Chief Magistrate Court in Abuja ordered that 29-year-old Ghali Isma’il be held in custody for sharing false TikTok videos claiming that President Bola Tinubu had died from food poisoning.
Isma’il was apprehended by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and later brought before the Magistrate Court.
The DSS told the court that the TikTok user’s actions violated Nigerian law.
In response, AI described Isma’il’s detention as a “clear demonstration of abuse of power.”
AI added that the arrest was an effort to silence Nigerian youths and limit their use of social media.
They also stated that Isma’il’s arrest was made without a comprehensive investigation into the authenticity of the videos.
On the other hand, NEYGA’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Dan-Musa, accused AI of exploiting the guise of freedom of speech to destabilize Nigeria.
In a statement he signed, Dan-Musa said: “We commend the DSS for approaching the courts to determine Isma’il’s guilt or innocence.
“Consequently, we urge our security agencies, particularly the DSS, to investigate the activities of AI in Nigeria as there is sufficient suspicion that they do not seek the good of Nigeria.
“When Nnamdi Kanu alleged that the late President Muhammadu Buhari had died and was replaced by a body double from Sudan, we condemned him.
“See where Kanu’s freedom of speech has landed us. This is why we stand resolute in our condemnation of Ghali Isma’il’s recent publications and the support he enjoys from Amnesty International.”
