Tinubu directs Southern and Northern governors to provide grazing land for herdsmen

The administration of President Bola Tinubu is urging governors to grant land so herders can graze their cattle, stating that it is dedicated to ending the ongoing conflicts between farmers and herders.

When President Tinubu was in Minna launching the Niger State agricultural project, he made this call.

“I know what it means for roaming cows to eat crops and the vegetation of our land. I know it is painful. But when we re-orient the herder and make provision for cattle rearing, we can address that,” Mr Tinubu said.

He added, “You are the governors who are to provide us with land. I, as President, am committed to providing a comprehensive programme that will solve this problem.”

Conflicts between farmers and herders have persisted for decades, occasionally leading to violence in Benue, the Plateau, and certain southern states.

Southern governors fiercely rejected efforts by former President Muhammadu Buhari to secure land for herders across the nation, fearing that herders pose a security danger to their states.

Most Southern states approved anti-grazing laws under President Buhari’s administration, making it illegal for herders to graze their cattle publicly.
