A South West-based pro-Tinubu group, known as the South West Democratic Agenda for Tinubu 2027, has called on the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, to step down, accusing him of leading Nigeria into a fiscal crisis marked by zero budget execution.
The group accused Edun of disappointing President Bola Tinubu and betraying the trust of millions of Nigerians who expected the economic team to stabilize the country’s finances.
In a statement released on Monday and signed by Otunba Adedayo Adewole, the group’s president, they claimed Edun’s continued presence in office would only worsen Nigeria’s economic challenges.
“Up till now, capital budget implementation under this administration stands at zero. This is not an exaggeration; it reflects the undeniable failure of the economic management team. Such a situation has never occurred in our country’s history. Wale Edun should resign because he has utterly failed in his duty to the nation,” Adewole alleged.
The group expressed disappointment that despite borrowing domestically and internationally, the federal government under Edun’s leadership has failed to service domestic debts or begin executing the 2025 Appropriation Act, even as September approaches.
“This outcome is shameful. While the previous administration under President Muhammadu Buhari had its shortcomings, it managed to implement its budget. Under Edun’s watch, Nigeria is drifting without a fiscal anchor. The inability to activate the capital budget is a glaring leadership failure,” Adewole added.
He emphasized that the Appropriation Act represents more than a policy—it is the “heartbeat of the government’s social contract with the people.” Ignoring or failing to implement it denies citizens the tangible benefits of governance.
“Capital projects include essential infrastructure like roads, hospitals, schools, water supply, and power. Zero percent execution means zero progress, leaving Nigerians stranded despite claims of effective governance,” the statement continued.
The group, instrumental in mobilizing votes for Tinubu in the South West during the 2023 elections, expressed disappointment that the region’s support is now met with “reckless economic mismanagement.”
They described the current economic difficulties as “man-made and avoidable,” blaming poor policy decisions, lack of prioritization, and “deliberate indifference to citizens’ suffering.”
The group also held the National Assembly accountable, warning lawmakers against shielding Edun or treating the issue lightly.
“If the legislature permits this failure to go unpunished, it will become complicit in betraying Nigerians. The National Assembly approved the budget; it must now ensure its implementation. Silence now would be a betrayal of the people,” they stated.
While reaffirming unwavering loyalty to President Tinubu, the group urged him to take immediate steps to restore confidence in his economic team.
