The prohibition on raw shea nut exports has been extended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for an additional year, now running from February 26, 2026, to February 25, 2027.

This was revealed in a statement on Wednesday by Bayo Onanuga, who serves as his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy.

Tinubu remarked that the choice highlights his administration’s dedication to promoting industrial development, bolstering domestic value addition, and aiding the goals of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The president further stated that the purpose of the ban is to increase processing capacity in Nigeria, improve the livelihoods of communities that produce shea, and foster the development of Nigerian exports based on value-added products.

He also empowered the two ministers from the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, as well as those from the Presidential Food Security Coordination Unit (PFSCU), to oversee the execution of a cohesive, evidence-based national framework that integrates industrialization, trade, and investment priorities throughout the shea nut value chain.

The president also sanctioned the implementation of an export framework set up by the Nigerian Commodity Exchange (NCX) and the retraction of all waivers permitting the direct export of unprocessed shea nuts.

In accordance with the established guidelines, Tinubu mandated that any surplus of raw shea nuts be exported solely through the NCX framework.

“The Federal Ministry of Finance should provide access to a dedicated NESS Support Window to enable the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment to pilot a Livelihood Finance Mechanism to strengthen production and processing capacity,” he said.

ZINGTIE states that shea nuts, which are the oil-laden fruits of the shea tree found in Nigeria’s Savanna belt, are the source ingredient for shea butter, known for its moisturizing, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant qualities.

Butter that has been extracted serves as a key component in skin and hair cosmetics, as well as in cooking oil meant for consumption.
