Chief Anabs Sara-Igbe has expressed grave alarm about the possible repercussions of President Bola Tinubu’s recent actions, warning that they could set a risky precedent, especially for PDP-controlled states.
He claimed that the President’s disrespect for constitutional procedures was made possible by the National Assembly. Legislators should be cautious about their backing, Sara-Igbe said, since they may eventually experience a similar political reaction.
“If the National Assembly believes this is a leader they can trust, they should be cautious because eventually, he will turn against them,” Sara-Igbe warned.
Comparing the scenario to a father settling a dispute between two children, the chief explained that there was no objection to the President’s intervention.
“You must be fair to both children. You cannot beat one and leave the other causing trouble. It is not possible. It is not right. A father must be fair to all his children. You cannot love one and show the other child that I love this one more than you,” he stated.
Sara-Igbe said that although the President is authorized by Section 305 of the Constitution to proclaim a state of emergency, this power does not include the ability to suspend or remove a governor.
He emphasized that the process for dismissing a governor or deputy governor is well-defined and that no provision gives the president this authority, citing constitutional provisions 182, 183, 188, and 189.
Disappointed, he said, he pointed out flaws in the Attorney General’s counsel to the President and warned that democracy itself might be in jeopardy.
“Our democracy is at risk because you must stand by the truth. You are suspending a governor, an elected governor of Rivers State, and you are not suspending or sacking the minister who is fomenting all the problems,” Sara-Igbe concluded.
