Amou Haji, renowned as the “world’s dirtiest man,” died at the age of 94 in rural Iran, shortly after taking his first bath in over six decades, according to local media.
Haji had lived a solitary existence in the village of Dejgah in Fars Province, avoiding soap and water for almost 60 years because he believed bathing would make him sick. His unique lifestyle, characterized by extreme minimalism and particular rituals, garnered global notice and fascination over time.
Residents say they’ve always been concerned about his health and cleanliness. After much persuading, Haji consented to bathe. However, his condition apparently deteriorated shortly after the wash, and he died few days later.
While there is no apparent medical link between the bath and his death, the timing spurred extensive internet discussion and reflection. Haji’s life became a compelling example of how personal ideas and decisions can significantly influence human behavior, even when they contradict society conventions.
Throughout his life, Amou Haji was a symbol of radical individualism, attracting visitors, photographers, and scholars drawn to his rejection of modern living. His death signals the end of an unconventional existence that has sparked debate about health, belief, and human agency.
