TRAGEDY: LAUTECH student dies during Sign-out Ceremony

The management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has confirmed the tragic death of one of its students during an outlawed sign-out ceremony at the Ultramodern Wazo Market in Ogbomoso. The student, Marvellous Olanrewaju Babalola, a 300-level Mechanical Engineering student, was allegedly shot at the venue and later succumbed to his injuries.

The Registrar, Olayinka O. Balogun, stated, “The university had issued a ban on sign-out activities and consequently prohibited such within the precincts of its campus since 2023.” Despite the ban, a group of students chose to hold a sign-out ceremony, which turned tragic.

The university’s management has extended its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, saying, “May God grant him eternal rest, and may his family find solace during this difficult time.” The institution is cooperating fully with the police as investigations continue, and the parents of the deceased have been informed.

The management of LAUTECH expressed deep sadness over the incident, which occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025. The police were promptly contacted, and personnel were deployed to the scene. The body was subsequently moved to the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital mortuary.
