Rev. Fr. Francis Anyanwu’s now-deleted Facebook post, in which he made serious claims against Bishop Augustine Echema and a number of the diocese’s priests, has caused chaos in the Catholic Diocese of Aba.

Fr. Anyanwu accused the diocesan leadership of widespread immorality, misuse of office, and cover-ups among the hierarchy, claiming that he was being unfairly singled out. Calls for an immediate investigation and heated debate among the faithful have been triggered by his message, which went viral before being removed.

“You began gathering people against me to accuse me falsely,” Fr. Anyanwu wrote, addressing Bishop Echema directly. “Because when the issue of the signpost of my home parish, St. Benedict’s, escalated, I was bold to narrate the true history of the parish and pointed out the irregularity that went on behind the scene on the part of the diocesan authorities which birthed the problem existing in the parish now.”

He claimed that instead of permitting a thorough investigation, the bishop resorted to what he called rumors and deception. “You made some bad moves geared at destroying my family unity,” he added.

Fr. Anyanwu claimed serious misbehavior by several priests close to Bishop Echema in his explosive post. He said the bishop had turned a blind eye due to previous personal ties and accused Fr. Kelechi Anyanwu of being “a sex maniac” with “many cases in the police station.”

He also accused Fr. Paul Nwaokeleme, claiming that his managerial style encouraged favoritism and divisiveness and characterizing him as a priest with “a case of paedophilia” and a history of “gossip and acrimony.”

The parish priest of Ohuhu Nsulu, Fr. Felix Onyeugba, was charged with a number of sexual offenses, including alleged financial exploitation and rape. “He buys goods from people and will not pay them, rather uses that as an opportunity to lure them to his bed,” Fr. Anyanwu wrote, stating that there were still unresolved matters regarding him.

Bishop Echema and the diocesan officials have not yet publicly addressed the accusations as of the time this report was filed.
