Most Reverend Stephen Mamza, the Catholic Bishop of Yola, has been chosen as the first Vice President of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM).

Mamza, who previously served as the Adamawa State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), was elected at the 20th SECAM Plenary Assembly held in Kigali, Rwanda, where African bishops gathered to discuss the Church’s mission.

A Congolese prelate and Archbishop of Kinshasa, Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo, was elected President. Meanwhile, Most Rev. José Manuel Imbamba, Bishop of Dundo in Angola, became the Second Vice President, and Rev. Gabriel Edoe Kumordji, Bishop of Keta-Akatsi in Ghana, was appointed Treasurer.

Rev. Fr. Rafael Simbine Junior from Mozambique retained his role as Secretary General, with Fr. Uchechukwu Obodoechina of Nigeria serving as Deputy Secretary General.

Bishop Mamza’s appointment as first vice president was warmly welcomed by the clergy, laity, and parishioners of the Yola Catholic Diocese.

They congratulated him and expressed confidence that he will perform well in his new position.
