On Friday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada would immediately retaliate if President Donald Trump imposes any tariffs on the country.
Trudeau’s remarks came amid rising trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada following Trump’s re-election.
On Thursday, Trump threatened to implement a 25% tariff on imports from both Mexico and Canada, set to take effect on Tuesday, March 4, 2025. He also mentioned that Canada would face a lower 10% tax on Canadian energy products, including electricity.
In response, Trudeau stated: “Canada will have an immediate and extremely strong response.”
“We will continue to do everything we can to avoid these tariffs. But if unjustified tariffs are imposed on Canada on Tuesday, we will respond immediately and strongly, as Canadians expect,” Trudeau added.
Trump explained that the proposed tariffs were aimed at reducing the flow of illicit drugs, such as fentanyl, from Canada and Mexico into the U.S.
“We’ve made progress on the migration issue, but we are still concerned about fentanyl-related deaths,” Trump said.
Trudeau, however, pointed out that Canada is also facing a similar issue with illicit drug inflow.
“The tariffs President Trump speaks of next week are focused on the fentanyl crisis in the U.S., but it’s also a crisis we are dealing with in Canada,” Trudeau emphasized.
