Nobel Laureate and globally recognized author Professor Wole Soyinka’s visa to the United States has been withdrawn by the Trump administration.

In his talk to reporters on the subject on Tuesday, Soyinka revealed this at Kongi’s Harvest Gallery in Lagos Island’s Freedom Park.

Soyinka expressed his surprise at the decision and stated that he was not aware of any offense that would have resulted in the revocation of his visa.

He implied that the US government was engaging in a witch hunt.

“It is necessary for me to hold this conference so that people in the United States who are expecting me for this event or that event do not waste their time,” he stated.

The Nobel laureate added that he was now unable to visit the US after receiving official notice from the Consulate that his visa had been revoked.

“I have no visa; I am banned, obviously, from the United States. And if you want to see me, you know where to find me,” Soyinka said.

He claims that although no particular justification was provided, the development was conveyed via an official letter.

“I’m still looking into my past history. I don’t have any past criminal record or even a felony or misdemeanour to qualify for the revocation.”

The professor went on to say that he had started thinking about what he had done in the past that might have led to the choice.

“I’ve started looking back—have I ever misbehaved toward the United States of America? Do I have a history? Have I been convicted? Have I gone against the law anywhere?” he asked.

Many observers found the revocation surprising because Soyinka, one of Africa’s most esteemed literary giants, has long maintained a close contact with the US academic and literary community.
