Victor Osimhen, the Galatasaray striker, has explained his refusal of the club captaincy from teammate İlkay Gundogan during their Turkish Super Lig victory over Alanyaspor on Saturday.
U susretu s Alanyasporom, Osimhen je postigao pogodak i imao asistenciju, a Galatasaray je dodatno povećao svoju prednost na vrhu tabele Turske Superlige na pet bodova.
Midfielder Lucas Torreira, however, took the field for Galatasaray while wearing the captain’s armband.
After Torreira was substituted in the second half, he passed the armband to Gundogan, who then handed it to Osimhen.
Osimhen, however, turned down Gundogan’s offer of the captain’s armband, telling the 35-year-old German to wear it himself.
During his post-match interview after the game, Osimhen was questioned about why he returned the captain’s armband to Gundogan.
The Nigerian international said: “Ilkay is someone I respect very much, someone very valuable to me. He is an incredible person. He’s both calm and motivating. Hebis visionary,” Osimhen said.
“It felt strange when he brought me the captain’s armband. I gave it back to him so he could lead us. He helps us every time he comes into the game. He’s someone who deserves love.”
