President Donald Trump of the United States claimed Monday, January 21, that Russian President Vladimir Putin was “destroying Russia” by refusing to reach an agreement to stop the conflict with Ukraine.

Trump asserted that by failing to reach an agreement to halt the conflict that began in February 2022, Putin was ruining Russia.

“He (Putin) should make a deal. I think he’s destroying Russia by not making a deal,” the 47th President of the United States told reporters on his return to the Oval Office.

“I think Russia’s going to be in big trouble,” Trump added.

Given his prior admiration for Putin, Trump’s unusually negative remarks about the Russian president are unexpected.

The newly inaugurated US president also confirmed preparations to see Putin, albeit without revealing a date.

A meeting between the two leaders during Trump’s first term became famous when the US president seemed to support the Russian leader against US intelligence, according to AFP.

“I got along with him great, I would hope he wants to make a deal,” said Trump, adding “He (Putin) can’t be thrilled he’s not doing so well.”

“I mean, he’s grinding it out, but most people thought that war would have been over in about one week, and now you’re into three years, right?” “I said.”

Trump claimed that the war was having a significant negative impact on Russia’s economy, which is already suffering from inflation.

“Zelensky wants to make a deal,” stated the Republican, who has previously lambasted Ukrainian President Volodymyr on numerous occasions.

Zelensky told Trump he wants a peace deal to stop the war, which began when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, according to Trump.

“Zelensky wants to make a deal,” Trump added. Trump has stated throughout his campaign that he will put an immediate stop to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and his advisers have suggested using US assistance to pressure Kyiv into making concessions.
