Russia’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, commended U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration for its stance on peace talks regarding Ukraine, describing it as a sign of “realism.”
Zakharova also referred to comments made by Trump, who has criticized his successor, Joe Biden, for being responsible for Russia’s war in Ukraine and for hinting that Kyiv could potentially join NATO.
This follows remarks by U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who stated that NATO membership for Ukraine was an unrealistic outcome in any negotiated settlement.
At a press briefing in Moscow on Friday, Zakharova stated, “I believe this is more of a reflection of realism.”
“[Trump] said that, in his opinion, the whole story began after Biden’s team started speculating about NATO, the inclusion of Ukraine in NATO, and so on,”** she added.
“In my opinion, this speaks of realism.”
Russia began its large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 without any provocation, at a time when Ukraine’s NATO membership was still a distant possibility.
NATO operates on an “open door policy,” meaning that any country that meets the necessary requirements can apply to join the alliance, as Finland and Sweden did in 2023.
