A 200-level Mass Communication student at the University of Ilorin reportedly committed suicide at his apartment in the Oke-odo region of Tanke, Ilorin.
A student consumed a toxic chemical last week while his flatmate was attending classes. A suicide note discovered at the scene described his struggle with financial difficulties, which he claimed had grown untenable.
A close friend, speaking under anonymity, said, “We returned to find a suicide note where he explained his struggles and decision to take the substance.”
The deceased had a 4.5 GPA and was sponsored by his widowed mother, a retired teacher.
In a related story, another Mass Communication student narrowly avoided death on Monday evening after attempting suicide on campus. Passers-by reported finding him with a rope around his neck in a nearby bush and quickly raised the alarm and he was rushed to the university’s medical centre for urgent care.
