BREAKING: Federal Polytechnic expels two students over cultism, dismisses deputy Rector

The management of Federal Polytechnic, Wannune, Benue State, has expelled two students for alleged involvement in cult-related activities.

The Rector, Dr. Tyover Ashinya, who disclosed this during a press briefing in Makurdi on Tuesday, maintained that the institution would not tolerate any form of social vices on its campus.

“Cultism is gradually becoming a culture in most tertiary institutions in Nigeria today. Just yesterday (Monday), we expelled two students from the school over cult-related activities,” he said.

Recalling the incident, the rector explained how the matter unfolded. “On this faithful day, I was in the office and started hearing loud noises outside; I rushed out only to see two students beating another student on campus, just a few minutes after they came out of the examination hall. Upon investigation, we discovered that they were members of a cult group and we expelled them,” Ashinya stated.

He further stressed that as a relatively new institution, established in 2021, the polytechnic was determined to maintain discipline and protect its students. “As a new institution, we will not condone any social vices within the school,” he added.

Ashinya also provided updates on the growth of the polytechnic, noting that it now operates 24 academic departments and eight Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes.

Meanwhile, the rector confirmed the dismissal of Dr. Doris Iorchi, the Deputy Rector, for gross misconduct. According to him, “She failed to present relevant documents to support her placement on the rank of Chief Lecturer and subsequent confirmation. For this reason, the council dismissed her for gross misconduct.
