The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has achieved a remarkable milestone in Nigeria, training over 20 million children and young people to take climate action through various initiatives. According to Dr. Jane Bevan, UNICEF Representative, Nigeria is one of the most climate-vulnerable countries, with rising temperatures, floods, and droughts impacting children’s health, education, and futures.

At the World Environment Day celebration in Abuja, Dr. Bevan highlighted the disproportionate impact of environmental degradation on children and youth, especially in vulnerable communities. “The climate challenge is not just a children’s crisis, but it is fundamentally a children’s and national crisis,” she emphasized.

UNICEF’s efforts have already yielded impressive results, with over 100,000 green actions recorded by children and young people, including tree planting, plastic waste management, and water conservation. The organization has also introduced a digital platform to empower digital youth empowerment and track their climate actions

Dr. Bevan urged governments, the private sector, civil society, and community leaders to support children and young people in leading the climate movement. “Today, we are calling on all of us… to join hands in enabling children and young people to lead this movement,” she said.

The initiative aims to create pathways to green economic opportunities, focusing on green skills, livelihoods, and youth entrepreneurship. By empowering young people, UNICEF hopes to build a sustainable future and mitigate the impacts of climate change
