The Faculty of Arts Alumni Association of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, has unveiled plans to establish a ₦500 million endowment trust fund to support indigent students and those with special needs. The initiative will also fund scholarships, research, learning innovations, faculty development, and a “Light Up Arts Complex” solar power project. The announcement comes ahead of the faculty’s 60th anniversary celebration.

Speaking at a press conference on campus, Chairman of the Central Planning Committee for the Faculty of Arts 60th anniversary, Hon. Francis Shonubi, made a passionate appeal for broad support. “We call on all alumni, stakeholders, corporate organisations, and the general public to generously support this initiative to help sustain and expand the faculty’s legacy for generations to come,” he said.

Explaining the scope of the endowment, Shonubi noted, “The funds will be utilised not only to assist indigent and special-needs students but also for research and learning innovations, scholarships, strategic faculty development goals, and the ‘Light Up Arts Complex’ initiative — an alternative solar power solution.”

On the forthcoming anniversary, he announced, “The celebration will run from Sunday, October 19, to Saturday, October 25, 2025, with a rich lineup of academic, social, and cultural activities designed to showcase the enduring legacy and future potential of the faculty.

Reflecting on the faculty’s history, Shonubi highlighted its impact over six decades. “The Faculty of Arts, known as ‘The Home of Letters,’ has stood as a beacon of intellectual excellence, scholarship, and cultural advancement in Nigeria and across the African continent for 60 years,” he remarked. He further revealed that this year’s theme is “Humanities as the Tech Solution to Global Crisis in 21st Century Africa.”

The keynote lecture will be delivered by New Jersey–based lawyer, Dr. Elvis Labode.

In his remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professor Akanbi Mudasiru Ilupeju, praised the faculty’s resilience and relevance. “The existence and continued relevance of the Faculty of Arts are clear testaments to the importance of arts and humanities in society,” he said. He stressed the role of the humanities in driving societal progress. “Arts and humanities are crucial in analysing issues, documenting societal concerns, and projecting scientific discoveries,” he explained.

Professor Ilupeju also underscored the faculty’s adaptability in a fast-changing world. “The faculty has continued to transmit knowledge in innovative ways, demonstrating its ability to adapt to the digital age,” he added.

The celebration is expected to draw several dignitaries, including former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi; Chief Tunde Fanimokun; and Hon. Kafilat Moyosore Ogbara, member of the House of Representatives for Ketu Federal Constituency, among others
