US-based Nigerian doctor, Funke Afolabi-Brown, breaks record

Nigerian doctor Dr. Funke Afolabi-Brown founded The Restful Sleep Place, a sleep clinic, she is the first black woman to do so, as part of her efforts to address the global health issues that affect mothers and children.

The Restful Sleep Place’s creator and CEO, Dr. Afolabi-Brown, stated that the business “helps professional women and their children optimise their health and performance through sleep.”

The Nigerian doctor resides in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and now provides in-person or virtual medical services to patients in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and California. In the upcoming year, she intends to expand her practice nationwide.

Her organisation provides “holistic sleep care for children from infancy to 18 years old through her innovative virtual practice and integrative approache,” according to a LinkedIn post she made.

Her creativity is motivated by the fact that sleep deprivation affects 60% of children in the US and is frequently linked to behavioural issues, learning disabilities, and persistent illnesses.

With more than 20 years of expertise as a board-certified paediatric pulmonologist and sleep medicine specialist, Afolabi-Brown was motivated by the challenge and embarked on a quest to solve this problem, one family at a time.

“Sleep deprivation doesn’t just affect the individual; it impacts the entire family unit,” Afolabi-Brown said. “When a child is sleep deprived, their physical, mental and emotional health suffers. Parents are often physically and mentally exhausted themselves.”

“That is why our approach is family-centered. We address the root cause by looking at medical, psychosocial and behavioral components, from which we create customisable sleep treatments honoring the family’s values.”

After facing her own sleep difficulties and the associated side effects, Afolabi-Brown founded RestfulSleepMD, a platform that provides families with individualised sleep coaching and consultation. Her objective is to promote optimal sleep health.

She provides families with personalised, patient-centered, integrative treatment through her clinic, The Restful Sleep Place, as an alternative to the hurried 20–30 minute consultations provided by standard hospitals.

As a result of her creative methods, Dr. Funke Afolabi-Brown has gained popularity as a speaker and sleep specialist on a number of websites, including Baby Centre, the largest digital parenting resource in the world, The Wall Street Journal, and Abc News.

Following a sleep medicine residency at the University of Pennsylvania and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Dr. Afolabi-Brown finished her fellowship in paediatric pulmonology at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia.

She specialises in treating a variety of paediatric sleep disorders, such as narcolepsy, behavioural sleep disorders, restless legs syndrome, chronic insomnia, sleep disordered breathing, and sleep problems in kids with underlying illnesses like autism, mental health disorders, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
