The Federal Bureau of Intelligence, or FBI, has been ordered by the United States District Court for the District of Columbia to release information about President Bola Tinubu.
On Tuesday, Judge Beryl Howell issued the directive.
This came about as a result of a motion filed by American Aaron Greenspan to have a previous decision reconsidered.
According to Howell, it is “neither logical nor plausible” to keep the knowledge private.
Greenspan had charged that the FBI had violated the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) by not disclosing “documents relating to purported federal investigations into” Tinubu and one Abiodun Agbele within the allotted period.
In 1993, Tinubu was accused of forfeiting $460,000 to the US government after investigators connected the money to drug trafficking profits.
Recall how Tinubu’s ability to run for Nigeria’s presidency was contested in the Presidential Election Petition Court by former PDP Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party candidate Peter Obi?
Then the question of Tinubu’s loss of the cash appeared significantly, but the electoral court dismissed the suits and validated Tinubu’s election.
Judge Howell did, however, partially rule in favor of Greenspan on Tuesday.
The judge declared that the DEA and FBI had not demonstrated that their use of the FOIA was appropriate.
