The Vatican has shared images showing Pope Francis lying in his open coffin during the Confirmation of the Death of the Pontiff ceremony.
This ceremony, held on Monday night, lasted just under an hour.
During the event, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican camerlengo, read aloud the formal declaration of the pope’s passing.
Pope Francis’ body was placed in an open wooden casket inside the chapel of the Domus Santa Marta hotel.
The images revealed the late pope resting serenely, dressed in red liturgical attire, wearing the papal mitre, and holding a rosary, as the Vatican Secretary of State offered prayers over him.
After the camerlengo declares the pope’s death and before the papal apartment is sealed, he will use a special hammer to break the pope’s Fisherman’s ring and destroy the dies used to create the papal seal found on apostolic letters.
These items will be buried alongside the pope.
On Tuesday morning, the Congregation of Cardinals gathered at the Vatican to begin making arrangements for Francis’ funeral.
They will oversee the preparations for his burial and organize the upcoming conclave to select his successor.
Official mourning will last for nine days, but the conclave will not begin until at least 15 days after Francis’ passing.
The pope died at 88 after suffering a cerebral stroke that led to a coma and irreversible heart failure.
