Vatican authorities have officially announced the date for Pope Francis’ burial.
This comes shortly after a meeting held within a day of the public announcement of his death.
The initial gathering of the Cardinals took place on Tuesday morning to organize the funeral arrangements for the Pope, who passed away at the age of 88 on Easter Monday.
The meeting, called by Giovanni Batista Re, Deacon of the College of Cardinals, began at 9 a.m. local time (8 a.m. BST).
During this first session one of several planned “general congregations” they confirmed that the funeral will be held on Saturday, April 26.
Before the service, which is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. local time (9 a.m. BST), Pope Francis’ remains will be transferred from the Chapel of Domus Sanctae Marthae to St. Peter’s Basilica.
His body will lie in the Basilica for three days, allowing the public an opportunity to pay their final respects.
The Vatican has indicated that this transfer could happen as early as Wednesday morning, ahead of the weekend funeral.
