Veteran Juju music legend of the 1970s, Ahuja Bello, has passed away.
The news was confirmed on Sunday by his son, Adetunji Bello, who revealed that the music icon died in the early hours of the day just one day after celebrating his 83rd birthday.
Born Ismaila Dele Bello on August 24, 1942, in Iseyin, Oyo State, Ahuja Bello rose to fame as a Juju musician, guitarist, and band leader during the 1970s and 1980s.
Before making a full transition into music, he initially worked as an electronics technician. In 1976, he followed his passion and launched Ahuja Bello and His Golden Eagles Band, a group that became a major force in Juju music at the time.
He was known for his energetic performances and timeless songs like Awa ti Danfo and Ariya ti de. In 1979, he traveled to London to produce the album Ahuja in London, an experience that brought him in contact with international acts, including the legendary Bob Marley.
Although his music career suffered a major setback due to an accident on July 24, 1982 just weeks before he turned 40 his influence and contributions to Nigerian music endured, earning him lasting respect in the country’s cultural history.
