Renowned academic and writer Professor Chidi Amuta has provided a fascinating behind-the-scenes account of his involvement in the celebration of Rotimi Amaechi, the former Minister of Transportation of Nigeria, turning 60.
Prof. Amuta described his initial reluctance to give a public lecture titled “Poverty and Hunger in Nigeria” as part of the birthday celebrations in a video posted by Symfoni TV on YouTube.
“When I got the invitation to deliver this message, I was a bit troubled,” Prof. Amuta said while speaking at the podium. “But it was Rotimi himself who picked up the phone to call me. He said, ‘Boss, you are the one to take the lecture.’ I asked, ‘What is the problem? What’s the subject of the lecture?’ He said, ‘It’s about poverty and hunger.’ I asked, ‘For what occasion?’ He said, ‘My birthday.’ I said, ‘Which birthday?’ He replied, ‘I’m 60.’ I said, ‘You, 60 already?’ And we laughed over it.”
Amaechi’s decision to utilize the milestone as a forum to start a national dialogue on pressing socio-economic concerns garnered attention due to the somber topic she chose for her birthday celebration.
According to reports, Prof. Amuta’s talk covered the core reasons of poverty in Nigeria as well as the pressing need for structural reforms.
Since then, Amaechi’s 60th birthday has sparked discussions on the internet, not just because of the celebration but also because of its thoughtful tone and intellectual depth.
