In Benin, Edo State, a Nigerian man described a terrible experience he had with guys he thought were police officials.
Stopped on his way home from work, he claimed that they demanded ₦1 million, beat him, handcuffed him, and profiled him as wealthy based on a picture of his American wife.
In addition to extorting ₦500,000 from a GLE driver, the officers detained him from 8 p.m. until 1 a.m.
When they were unable to extract the substantial amount they requested, he continued, the officers—who wore no name tags nor identification—finally left him on the side of the road at one in the morning.
“They took my phone, my power bank, my charger, everything I had on me. My wife was at home crying, not knowing what had happened. These men are supposed to protect us, but they are kidnappers in uniform,”he said tearfully.
