Online responses to a widely shared video showing former military commander Ibrahim Babangida in a wheelchair have been conflicting, particularly among those who are not aware of his present state of illness.

The video shows Babangida, 83, sitting still next to Gambo Abubakar, the brother of Niger State Governor Umar Bago. Many have referred to the video as a reminder of how short life is, and it has sparked discussions on power, aging, and legacy.

Known for calling off Nigeria’s historic June 12, 1993 election, Babangida made news in February 2025 when, 32 years later, he finally apologized and openly recognized MKO Abiola as the legitimate winner.
