Viral video: Imo Police goes tough against officer extorting motorists

The Imo State Command of the Nigeria Police has taken action against its officers who engage in unprofessional behaviour in an effort to purge the bad apples from its ranks and files.

Aboki Danjuma, the commissioner of state police, made the announcement in response to a video that showed a police officer extorting money from motorists.

Inspector Isong Osudueh of the Counter Terrorism Unit, CTU, Owerri, was revealed as the incompetent officer who was caught extorting money from drivers along the Owerri-Onitsha express road by Police Public Relations Officer ASP Henry Okoye, speaking on behalf of the CP.

He said that the officer will be demoted for such dishonourable and unprofessional behaviour once the police disciplinary committee held the required orderly room hearings, and that the unit’s supervising officer had been called in for an official investigation into his lack of supervision.

“The disciplinary actions taken against the erring officer underscore the Command’s unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, transparency, and integrity among its personnel, while effectively discharging its lawful duties and entrenching public trust and confidence,” the PPRO stated.

Under the Commissioner’s direction, Okoye insisted, the Command was committed to clearing the police of any embarrassing behaviour by any of its officers.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, reiterates that the Command under his watch will not condone any act of extortion or misconduct by its personnel and warns that any supervisory officer who fails to carry out his oversight duties will be severely sanctioned,” he added.
