Super Falcons midfielder Toni Payne has expressed lasting satisfaction with her decision to represent Nigeria instead of the United States.
Born in Birmingham, Alabama to Nigerian parents, the 30-year-old previously played for the U.S. at various youth levels, from U-17 through U-23, before making the switch to Nigeria at the senior level.
The former Ajax star announced her intention to change her international allegiance in 2019 and made her debut for the Nigerian women’s national team two years later.
Since then, she has featured for the Super Falcons in four major tournaments, including the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, and the Olympic Games.
According to Payne, choosing to play for Nigeria remains a decision she holds dear, with no regrets about leaving the U.S. program behind.
“Even though I did grow up with dreams of playing for the US, when I had the opportunity to play for Nigeria, it was almost a no-brainer and a no question for me. So, yeah, no regrets,” she said.
