In the conflict with M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, at least four further South African troops have lost their lives.

According to report gathered, since the battle intensified last week, 13 South African peacekeepers have been murdered.

Following reports, South African troops are in Congo as part of Southern African and U.N. operations.

Three South African National Defence Force, or SANDF, soldiers were killed when M23 insurgents detonated mortar shells toward Goma airport in eastern Congo, the Department of Defence said in a statement on Monday.

Another soldier who was hurt fighting M23 militants during the last three days passed away from their wounds, the Department of Defense reported.

The administration had earlier claimed the deaths of nine South African peacekeepers.

The defense department stated on Tuesday that the SANDF was still dedicated to its peacekeeping responsibilities in Congo under the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and MONUSCO missions, which are mandated by the United Nations.
