Officials of the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) have uncovered a facility in Kaduna being used to store and distribute expired soft drinks worth over ₦35 million.
The operation was disclosed by Andrew Tamanuwa, Deputy Director of the agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate in Kaduna. He explained that the breakthrough came after a tip-off from a vigilant member of the public.
Following the alert, NAFDAC operatives intercepted two buses and a Volkswagen Golf car transporting the expired beverages en route to Kwanar Dangora in the Kiru Local Government Area of Kano State.
The confiscated goods consisted of 700 packs of Schweppes and 300 packs of Fanta Orange, all of which had expired as far back as November 2024.
The expired items have since been moved to NAFDAC’s storage facility, where they are scheduled for destruction in line with public health protocols.
Tamanuwa further confirmed that the individual responsible for the stockpile has been apprehended and is currently in custody. Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend any additional parties linked to the illicit distribution network.
