LG autonomy: What we did over Supreme Court judgement – NULGE

In order to secure a positive ruling on local government (LG) financial autonomy from the Supreme Court, the National Union of Local Government Employees, or NULGE, Osun branch, announced that it had instituted a fast.

In an interview with NAN on Thursday in Osogbo, Dr. Kehinde Ogungbangbe, the chairman of the Osun State NULGE, stated as much.

Ogungbangbe applauded the supreme court’s decision to give the nation’s 774 local government councils financial autonomy.

He predicted that the ruling would revitalise local government districts around the nation in terms of expansion and advancement.

He said that with the resources at their disposal, councils will be able to handle the majority of their business.

“I am very happy and I believe every local government employee in Nigeria should also be very happy with this latest development.

“Osun has been in support of local government autonomy earlier before now, and I know there cannot be any obstacle in making it a reality,” Ogungbangbe said.

NAN remembers that the federal government petitioned the Supreme Court to force the 36 federation states’ governors to give local governments complete financial autonomy.

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), filed the lawsuit on behalf of the Federal Government under the case number SC/CV/343/2024.

NAN further reminds readers that the Supreme Court ruled that all future allocations to local government councils must be made straight into their accounts.

The order was given during the delivery of the judgement by Justice Emmanuel Agim, who presided over a panel of seven justices of the Supreme Court.
