Dr. Ibrahim Mani, a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has claimed that during the most recent by-elections, the All Progressives Congress (APC) bought more votes than any other political party.

According to Dr. Mani, who spoke on Trust TV, his party kept an eye on polling places across several states and saw significant voter incentivizing, with the ruling party reaping the majority of the benefits.

“In most of the places we monitored, it was the ruling party that benefited more from vote buying. And in Kano, the ruling party in the state also bought votes,” he said.

He claimed that the practice was made feasible by politicians who purposefully made citizens poor in order to make them easy targets during elections.

“And what we have seen as a clear indication of what a government can achieve if they made poverty to be this widespread and rampant in a country.

“They have so impoverished the people to the extent that the end game is to use this poverty against them and then bring out money to induce voters during elections,” Mani explained.

He asserted that voters received up to ₦20,000 each in certain polling stations.

“At least now there is a little improvement from the last elections, where they were just giving spaghetti and macaroni. In some instances, they are now giving as much as ₦20,000 per voter,” he added.

However, the ADC commander stated that his party was still constructing its framework and evaluating its capabilities.

He pointed out that they had direct knowledge of the electoral process by taking part in the elections.

“We are still rolling out structures, mobilising and creating an environment that will make Nigerians have confidence in the electoral system. For us, these by-elections were about testing the waters.

If we didn’t participate in the elections, I wouldn’t be sitting here and talking about what we have observed. What we saw is a clear indication of what a government can achieve if it deliberately spreads poverty to make people vulnerable,” he said.
