Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s claim that the Ikwerre ethnic nationality in Rivers State is an integral element of the Igbo ethnic group has been denied by the Iwhnurohna Progressive Union (IPO).
Instead, IPO claimed that as a result, they are being harassed.
According to Daily Trust, Dr. Okachikwu Dibia, President of IPO, disclosed this information at an Abuja media briefing.
Dibia submitted a plea to Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), pleading with him to step in and deal with threats against the Ikwerre people made by well-known Ohanaeze Ndigbo members should they persist in rejecting the Igbo identity.
He continued by outlining eleven arguments against Ikwerre being considered Igbo, including linguistic, historical, and cultural distinctions.
“While Ikwerre is our political name, Iwhnurohna is our native name. Both refer to the same people: the Ikwerre ethnic nationality, found in Rivers State, Niger Delta, South South geopolitical region of Nigeria.
“When they say ‘Ikwerre is Igbo,’ they imply that all ancestral communities in Ikwerre originated from Igboland. This is not true,” Dibia said.
He argues that the assertion that Iwhnurohna is Igbo because of their language is based on past exchanges and does not necessarily define their ethnicity.
“The Ikwerre Ethnic Nationality believes in one Nigeria,” he concluded.
