What Nnamdi Azikiwe said when northerners wanted secession

Following the agitations by campaigners for the Oodua and Biafra nations, social media is rife with mixed opinions. Secession from Nigeria would be the best course of action for these people, who believe they have been marginalised. Some people think restructuring Nigeria would be the real deal, while others call for secession.

The Nigerian government, which views anyone advocating for disintegration as a threat to national security, is unwilling to listen to the agitators’ request for secession. The Nigerian government had stated unequivocally that it would exert every effort to maintain national unity.

I learned from my internet research that Nnamdi Azikiwe was a major factor in getting Nigeria to where it is now. On May 12, 1953, Nnamdi Azikiwe spoke in front of his political party’s caucus, the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC), in Yaba, Nigeria. At the time, Northern Nigerians considered breaking away from the Nigerian colony, which would soon become a nation.

Nnamdi Azikiwe made it apparent that there would be dire repercussions if the Northern area gained independence. He continued by saying that his party wanted Nigeria to stay one nation. He educated them on the value of remaining unified, and his words were not ignored.

He forced these Northern leaders to consider the advantages and disadvantages of breaking away before taking this dangerous step.

I feel a great spiritual connection to the North because I was born there, but dividing the North and the South would be a grave political error. Nnamdi Azikiwe had disclosed how his demands for Nigeria’s independence had nearly resulted in his assassination.

Since the latter is better positioned to advance the constitution more quickly than the former, a breakup of the North and South would benefit both groups more than their Northern relatives. Nigerians should commend Nnamdi Azikiwe for maintaining national unity.

Nnamdi Azikiwe’s statement should serve as a lesson to everyone calling for secession. The truth is that humankind depends on one another to exist. Despite our ethnic differences, let’s work together to identify the issues, solve them, and create a country where justice and peace are the norm. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
