Nasir El-Rufai, who formerly governed Kaduna State, stated that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will not hold power indefinitely and emphasized that political power in Nigeria is always open to competition.
While addressing the 23rd Daily Trust Dialogue, themed “Nigeria’s Fourth Republic: What Is Working and What Is Not,” El-Rufai made the statement.
He claims that Nigeria’s democratic experience is notable in Africa because no one party has permanent control of power.
“Nigeria does not have a permanent ruling party, and that is an achievement,” El-Rufai said.
He remarked that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ruled Nigeria for 16 years before losing power and added that the APC will not govern indefinitely either.
“The PDP governed for 16 years. The APC will not govern forever. It is likely that in 2027, the APC will be gone,” he said.
El-Rufai stated that this reality demonstrates that power in Nigeria is open to competition, unlike some African countries with dominant party systems.
“Power therefore remains contestable. This distinguishes Nigeria from dominant party systems elsewhere on the continent,” he said.
He added, though, that political competition has not yet resulted in good governance or accountability.
“Competition has not yet matured into accountability and good governance,” El-Rufai said.
He further observed that political parties in Nigeria are still weak, characterizing them as “personality-driven and transactional.”
The ex-governor, speaking from Brussels, Belgium, mentioned that he was recuperating from an illness and expressed his apologies for not being present at the Abuja event.
