21 Nigerians are presently on Indonesia’s death row, according to Abike Dabiri-Erewa, head of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission. She claimed that when she visited the prison, she discovered that one inmate was from Edo State and twenty others were from a state in the Southeast.
She clarified that attempts were made to persuade Indonesian officials, but they refused to change their legislation, according to a DAILY POST report published on Monday, August 4, 2025.
According to her, Barrister Emmanuel, a lawyer, helped spare one of the Nigerians, while the other four were put to death. The others are still incarcerated and could be executed.
Dabiri-Erewa emphasized that although the majority of the prisoners were from the same area, it is incorrect to believe that all residents of that state are criminals.
The state governor has been trying to address the problem and make things better, she continued.
She said, “When we went into that prison, I’ve said it before, and I said again, 21 of them, 20 were from one state in the southeast 20, the other one was one Edo state. But at the same time, that doesn’t mean you should generalize and say everybody in that state is a criminal, and the governor of that state has tackled the issue.”
