Why FG is interested in completing the National Data Fusion Centre

In an effort to stop criminal activity in the nation, the Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to finishing the National Data Fusion Centre, or NDFC, which would allow security agencies to communicate and exchange information.

In a meeting with Stanley Udeh, the head of Interpol/National Central Bureau and an Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) at the ministry’s Abuja headquarters, Permanent Secretary Dr Nasir Sani-Gwarzo revealed that the centre is working on eighteen interconnected projects.

When the centre is finished, he claimed, it will improve law enforcement, the ability of security services to solve many crimes, the pooling of criminal data, and the effectiveness of interagency cooperation.

He was mentioned in a statement released over the weekend by Bolaji Kazeem, the ministry’s deputy director of press.

Sani-Gwarzo claims that the Minister of State, Hajia Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim, and the Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, are pushing for the projects’ prompt completion and have instructed that any gaps be fixed to guarantee the successful implementation of the ministry’s primary outcome area of the technological transformation.

He said: “With what we are doing now, I am optimistic that the Nigeria Police Force will function effectively and efficiently to deliver quality service to Nigerians,

“We do not need to wait for the United Nations to provide us data on criminal activities in our domain. We need to do more to profile and document criminals in the country and the ministry is ready to support the Nigeria Police Force to have the capacity to do that.”

The permanent secretary added, “As the data centre facility is 50% completed and 100% equipment purchased, there is the need for physical structure development to go along with the mobilization of sister agencies which the NPF is interfacing with for the manpower training.”

AIG Stanley Udeh, the Interpol/National Crime Bureau head, had earlier noted that the National Crime and Incident Data Base Center and the National Criminal Data Center are developing under the ministry’s supervision. For this reason, he emphasized the necessity of having a functional, centralized Criminal Data Center to harmonize data pockets among sister agencies.

He stated that his office is a national organization that communicates and plays a part in the international police operation by interacting with both local police and international law enforcement agencies, adding that “What is needed now is to set up a committee that will promote interagency understanding in the development of the center.”

“The essence of Interpol is to support global law enforcement operations. The Interpol activities extend to a jurisdiction with no diplomatic relations and the interaction is such that law enforcement should not be hindered by military, political, religious or commercial issues,” Udeh explained.
