Shehu Sani, a former lawmaker from Kaduna Central Senatorial District, has opened up about his decision to rejoin the All Progressives Congress (APC) after a stint with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Sani’s journey began in October 2018 when he left the APC due to disagreements over the party’s primaries. He then joined the PDP, securing the party’s senatorial ticket, but ultimately lost the 2019 election to the current Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani.

Fast forward to February 16, Sani made a surprise return to the APC, accompanied by some PDP and New Nigeria Peoples Party members in Kaduna. So, what prompted this move?

According to Sani, the Kaduna Governor played a significant role in his return to the APC. The governor’s efforts to reconcile with Sani and other party members across the state paved the way for his comeback.

Sani, a founding member of the APC in Kaduna State, highlighted the circumstances that led to his initial departure from the party. He cited differences with the then-governor, Nasir El-Rufai, which were both personal and political in nature.

However, with the new governor in place, Sani saw an opportunity to return to the party he helped establish. He praised the governor’s efforts to build bridges and make amends, which ultimately led to his decision to rejoin the APC.

He said, “A circumstance led to our mass exit from the APC sometime in 2018, and that circumstance has changed, and then we rejoined the APC in Kaduna state.

“First of all, I was a founding member of APC, particularly in Kaduna state. We established structures, and we did the campaigns and won the 2015 elections both at the senatorial and the governorship levels, somewhere along the way, we parted ways with the governor (Nasir El-Rufai) in the state.

“We parted ways over differences that are both political, personal and also issues that affect the state, and for that reason, we had to evict ourselves out of the party and then now we have a new governor who reached out to us.

“A governor who has been making consultations, building bridges across the state and then we also met and agreed that we should return to the party that we founded in Kaduna State.”
