Why Tinubu approved N70,000 Minimum Wage revealed

A new minimum salary of N70,000 has been approved by President Bola Tinubu for Nigerian workers, and he has promised to revisit the country’s minimum wage law every three years.

This follows a meeting on Thursday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja between the President and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress.

In a statement on X, Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Advisor on Information and Strategy, verified the development.

“President Bola Tinubu has approved N70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers with promise to review the national minimum wage law every three years.

“President Tinubu also promised to find ways to assist the private sector and the sub-nationals to pay the minimum wage.

“President Tinubu announced the decisions at the meeting held with leaders of TUC and NLC on Thursday in Abuja, the second time the parties met in 7 days,” the statement read.

Onanuga went on to say that labour leaders applauded President Tinubu for his “fatherly gesture” and that the President promised to use his executive discretion to settle the unpaid salary arrears to university unions.
