Why Tinubu’s suddenly have interest in Ekweremadu – Mahdi Shehu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s abrupt action to gain the release of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu from a UK prison, according to social critic and activist Mahdi Shehu, is politically driven and connected to the 2027 general elections.

Shehu asserted in a post on his official X account on Tuesday that Tinubu’s recent choice to form a powerful committee to discuss Ekweremadu’s detention with the UK government was motivated by political strategy rather than sympathy.

He claims that the President abruptly awoke from his diplomatic slumber and recalled Ekweremadu, who has been imprisoned since his organ trafficking conviction in 2023.

Shehu pointed out that Tinubu’s choice was made in spite of Nigeria’s current absence of a significant ambassador to the UK, who he claimed could have handled the situation more skillfully through conventional diplomatic channels.

“The UK justice system is nearly watertight. The opportunity to resolve the Ekweremadu issue was lost long ago.”

He went on to say that Nigeria’s only practical choice was to look into a prisoner transfer arrangement if one already existed and had been carried out between the two nations.

He believes that Tinubu’s behavior is a political ploy rather than a humanitarian effort.

“My take is that Tinubu is using the Jamboree trip to show he cares and is concerned because the election is approaching and Ekweremadu is the only visible Ndi- igbo that is not on ” THE TRAIN” From Bombay to Goa. And with him on board Ndi- igbo will be finally captured.

“Other Nigerians convicted or detained at various prisons all over the world will never receive the Ekweremadu attention because even if they are released they will be of no political value to Tinubu. Such is the visible miscalculation.”
