Why we regret voting Tinubu: Northern elders reveals their decision ahead of 2027

According to the Northern Elders Forum, the northern region regrets voting for Bola Tinubu in the general elections in 2023.

The elders noted that the North had learned a lesson from the error of voting for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for President in the 2023 elections.

The forum has criticized the President harshly for the nation’s growing insecurity.

The elders claimed that after just a few months in office, the current government had failed to safeguard Nigerians, as seen by the recent kidnapping of Kuriga schoolchildren in Kaduna.

The region will now prioritize unity and consensus when choosing a candidate for the nation’s highest post, according to the forum’s spokesperson Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, who spoke to The Guardian in a chat on Tuesday.

Recall that Tinubu polled a total of 8,794,726 votes in the 2023 general elections to win the presidency.

A total of 5.4 million votes were cast for the President by the Northern regions of North West, North East, and North Central.

Questioned about the recent visit and donations to northern villages made by former Anambra Governor Peter Obi, Suleiman stated: “The North made a mistake in voting Bola Tinubu to the presidency in 2023, and it is unlikely that they will repeat the same error in the future.

“They have learned from their past misstep and will strive to select a candidate who can unite the country and govern in the best interests of all Nigerians.

“Moving forward, the North will be more cautious in selecting a candidate for the presidency.

“They will prioritize someone who is seen as more inclusive, less controversial, and more aligned with the interests of all regions of the country.

“The mistake of supporting Tinubu in 2023 has taught them the importance of unity and consensus in selecting a candidate for the highest office in the land.”
