Widow cries for justice as husband’s alleged killers threaten her from prison

Mrs. Christiana Onyebuchi Apugo, a 32-year-old widow from Umuawa Alaocha in Umuahia North LGA of Abia State, has alleged that Victor Orisara Apugo, who is currently in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Facility, is threatening to deal with her if he is released from prison.

In an appeal to Ikechuckwu Uwanna, the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of Abia State, Mrs. Apugo made the allegation that Mr. Victor Apugo and a few other suspects, who are on trial for their alleged roles in her husband’s murder on November 7, 2022, are messaging her, boasting that they will deal with her if they are released on April 17, 2024, when their trial is scheduled.

The widow claims that on Monday, November 7, 2022, her late husband, Mr. Onyebuchi Orisara Apugo, was beaten to death and hung to a tree by a group of boys who were allegedly brought by her late husband’s brother, Mr. Victor Orisara Apugo, for allegedly accusing the victim of stealing a plantain.

She stated that while she was still pregnant, her husband was murdered in front of her at around two in the morning, and the invaders threatened to deal with her if she tried to warn the villagers.

She claimed that after being taken into custody by the Afugiri Police Station, the suspects were eventually arrested by the Zone 9 Police Command and charged in court.

The widow appealed to Mr. Ikechuckwu Uwanna, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Abia State, to investigate the alleged threat in addition to demanding justice for her slain husband.

She further stated that there is intense speculation that the Attorney General of Abia authorized the case designated No. U/455/C is to be dismissed on April 17. She further stated that she and her infant son escaped to Okwelle, Imo State, to escape starvation and the threat to their life.

Journalists received confirmation from Ikedinachi Moses, the traditional Prime Minister of Umuawa Alaocha, that the issue had been reported to HRH, Eze Godswill Asomugha’s palace.

Ikechuckwu Uwanna, the attorney general of Abia State, denied issuing any directive directing the matter to be resolved by April 17 in response to the claims.

The widow was advised to sign a petition indicating that she is under threat and cannot remain in her home because she is pursuing justice, as he stated that Governor Alex Otti is against intimidating witnesses.

“His Excellency has mandated us to ensure we give her all the protection that the state can afford her.

“This is because it is a criminal matter that is very sensitive and important to us. We are committed to ensuring that justice is done in each and every criminal case,” Uwanna said.

Without justice, he noted, society would not have peace or development.
